UCLG-MEWA TO COOPERATE WITH D-8 28.08.2014

Mehmet DUMAN, UCLG-MEWA Secratary General, held a meeting with Dr. Seyed Ali-Mohammad MOUSAVI, D-8 Secretary General, at the office of the latter, on 20 August 2014. The meeting took place in the D-8 Secretariat General in Istanbul, in a warm atmosphere.

Mr. Mehmet DUMAN, Secretary General, and Salim KORKMAZ, Project Officer represented UCLG-MEWA at the meeting, while D-8 was represented by Dr. Seyed Ali-Mohammad MOUSAVI, Secretary General, and Mr.  Kazi Ziaul HASAN Director of Economy, Implementation and External Relations.

Mehmet DUMAN briefed the Secretary General on UCLG-MEWA activities and publications.  Mr. DUMAN, who stressed that the region in which UCLG-MEWA operates substantially overlaps with the D-8 countries, expressed his belief that establishment of structural cooperation between D-8 and UCLG-MEWA, whose headquarters are located in Istanbul, Turkey will be beneficial to both organizations. Mehmet DUMAN stated that they are ready, as UCLG-MEWA, to assume the role of the local partner of D-8, and a memorandum of understanding may be signed between the two organizations.

Dr. Seyed Ali-Mohammad MOUSAVI, who congratulated Mehmet DUMAN for the recent activities of UCLG-MEWA, stated that the basic areas of activity of D-8, particularly transportation and energy are directly related to local authorities and that they, as D-8 organization, attach importance to the local authorities in this context.  Mr. MOUSAVI, who welcomed Mr.  DUMAN’s proposal of to sign a MoU, expressed that UCLG-MEWA and D-8 may co-organize some of their events in the upcoming period.

The meeting, which proved to be quite fruitful, was concluded with reciprocal presentation of gifts.
