UCLG-MEWA SECRETARY GENERAL VISITED CONSUL GENERAL OF AFGHANISTAN 20.03.2015
Mehmet DUMAN, UCLG-MEWA Secretary General, and Adrien LICHA, Projects Coordinator, visited Abdul Malik QURAISHI, Consul General of Afghanistan in Istanbul in his office on 20 March 2015. This meeting took place in the framework of UCLG-MEWA activities to strengthen its network and increase the participation of cities from all countries of the MEWA region.
Mr Mehmet DUMAN provided information about the activities of UCLG-MEWA during 2014 and presented samples of the periodical and non-periodical publications of UCLG-MEWA to Mr. QURAISHI. After informing the Consul General briefly about the UCLG World Organization and its Sections, UCLG-MEWA Membership invitation letters which were prepared for the mayors of major Afghan cities were given to Mr. QURAISHI to be delivered to the relevant mayors.
Mr. QURAISHI welcomed UCLG-MEWA efforts to strengthen links between cities in the region and expressed his interest to activities of our organization. Mr. QURAISHI has been aware of UCLG-MEWA since 2010 as he was in charge of the follow-up of the participation of Kabul Mayor to UCLG-MEWA Executive Bureau in Diyarbakir, and he acknowledged the added value of networks of cities such as UCLG in terms of capacity building and peers learning. Mr. QURAISHI provided us with many interesting information related to Afghan cities and rural areas, this has been a good opportunity to explore possible cooperation with UCLG-MEWA, particularly in the field of culture and economic development.
