Local and regional governments getting ready for UN Development Cooperation Forum preparatory meetings 

Dear members,
 
Every two years, the UN Development Cooperation Forum (UN DCF) is being held by the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
 
The UN DCF aims at reviewing trends and progress in international development cooperation and promoting greater coherence among the development activities of different development partners.
 
This year, the fourth UN DCF will take place in July in New York and advance global dialogue on the future of development cooperation in the post-2015 era.
 
UCLG is part of the Advisory Board of the Forum and has advocated for further recognition of the role of local governments in development. For the first time, the DCF 2012 counted with a Special Policy Session on Decentralised Cooperation, recognizing this important trend as efficient mechanism for development and the Policy Paper on Development Cooperation and Local Governments (2013) was included among the documentation.
 
The main objectives of this year’s UN DCF will be: to assess how a global partnership for development beyond 2015 could work in practice; to examine implications of a post-2015 development agenda for development cooperation; to identify ways to enhance national and global accountability and effective monitoring of development cooperation. It will also contain a segment dedicated to local governments.
 
A preparatory High-Level Symposium will take place in Berlin, Germany, on 20-21 March 2014, and a local governments meeting will take place on 19 March.
 
The High-Level Symposium will serve as the last key preparatory event for the 2014 Development Cooperation Forum of ECOSOC taking place in July. It will contribute to the ongoing preparations for a post-2015 development agenda, including the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals.
 
Some of the UCLG Champions on Local Government for Development will attend the meetings.
