MEDITERRANEAN COMMITTEE CLIMATE MEETING OF LOCAL AND REGIONAL ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES 29.11.2014

UCLG

Dear members,

Through the policy statement of the 3rd Forum of Local and Regional Authorities of the Mediterranean of April 2013, the elected representatives reiterated their will to share their experiences and to better voice their proposals in all the current processes in favour of development and preservation of the region.

COP 21, which will be held in December 2015, will probably be the most important meeting on climate change since the COP 15 held in Copenhagen, since it is supposed to lead to an international landmark agreement. It seems crucial that Mediterranean local and regional authorities be integrated in international negotiations ahead of this date.

The major role that local and regional authorities play in climate change policies is indeed something they demonstrate on a daily basis in the activities they implement in terms of adaptation to global warming, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, in various fields such as energy, transportation, urban planning, waste management, etc.

COP21 is an opportunity for us to reposition these challenges within the heart of international negotiations, to advocate a necessary awareness by Mediterranean governments, of the vulnerability of the Mediterranean region to the impact of global warming, and the acknowledgement of local and regional governments’ actions.

To develop a Mediterranean contribution, we invite you, on behalf of the Mediterranean Committee of United Cities and Local Governments and of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions to participate in the:

Climate Meeting of Mediterranean local and regional elected representatives
which will be held on:
Thursday 11 December 2014
from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Villa Méditerranée - Marseilles, France

This meeting will mobilise local and regional authorities as well as all the Mediterranean stakeholders working on the climate issue (research institutes, major donors, etc.) towards this goal, in order to deliver common messages to the December 2015 COP21.

Sincerely,

The UCLG World Secretariat
on behalf of the Mediterranean Committee
