Local and Regional Leaders met in 3W Congress

The Istanbul International Solid Waste, Water and Wastewater Congress was organized in Istanbul between 22-24 May jointly by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) and ISTAC in cooperation with Ministry of Environment and Urbanism, Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs, ISKI, DSI, United Cities and Local Governments Middle East and West Asia Section (UCLG-MEWA) and Union of Municipalities of Turkey. The Congress enabled academicians, local and regional authorities and specialties all over the world to exchange knowledge and experience.

Dr. Kadir TOPBAŞ, Mayor of IMM and President of UCLG were represented by Mr. Adem BAŞTÜRK, IMM Secretary General. Mr. BAŞTÜRK delivered the message of Mr. Mayor: “We are honoured to host such a distinguished Congress in Istanbul. I believe that the congress will contribute to the main environmental issues of our planet including global warming. I hope that information and ideas presented in this meeting will help us to have a more livable world’’.

On the occasion of the Congress, World Mayors’ Meeting took place, bringing about 100 local and regional representatives all over the world to engage in a multi-stakeholder dialogue, exchange experiences and seek common solutions to the solid, waste and water-related problems in question. At the end of the meeting, the mayors and local authorities attending from different countries signed the “Istanbul Solid Waste Consensus” which aims to implement sustainable solid waste management strategies against the global changes.
