HORIZON 2020, THE BIGGEST FUNDING PROGRAMME EVER IN EU, CALLS FOR PROJECT 15.01.2015

HORIZON2020, THE BIGGEST FUNDING PROGRAMME EVER IN EU, CALLS FOR PROJECT

Dear Members,

In 2011 the EU Heads of State and Government called on the European Commission to bring together all of the previous EU's research and innovation funding under a single common strategic framework. The Commission launched a wide-ranging consultation involving all key stakeholders which has led to Horizon 2020.

Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020). By coupling research and innovation, Horizon 2020 is helping to achieve this with its emphasis on excellent science, industrial leadership and tackling societal challenges. The goal is to ensure Europe produces world-class science, removes barriers to innovation and makes it easier for the public and private sectors to work together in delivering innovation.

In light of this information, we would like to share with you the relevant project proposals, which might be interesting for you. Within the three main sections, “societal challenges” is the one involving local governments as an implementer and that you can find proposals mainly about mobility and smart cities.

Societal Challanges:

1.Secure, Clean and Efficient Energy:

                Smart Cities & Communities

Sustainable development of urban areas is a challenge of key importance. It requires new, efficient, and user-friendly technologies and services, in particular in the areas of energy, transport and ICT (information and communication technologies). However, these solutions need integrated approaches, both in terms of research and development of advanced technological solutions, as well as deployment. The focus on smart cities technologies will result in commercial-scale solutions with a high market potential.

Calls:

o   SCC-01-2015: Smart Cities and Communities solutions integrating energy, transport, ICT sectors through lighthouse (large scale demonstration - first of the kind) projects

2. Smart, Green and Integrated Transport :

The Transport Challenge is allocated a budget of €6 339 million for the period 2014-2020 and will contribute to four key objectives, each supported by specific activities. Horizon 2020 will provide funding for a resource efficient transport that respects the environment by making aircraft, vehicles and vessels cleaner and quieter to minimise transport systems impact on climate and the environment, by developing smart equipment, infrastructures and services and by improving transport and mobility in urban areas.

Horizon 2020 also aims at a better mobility, less congestion, more safety and security with a substantial reduction of traffic congestion; with a substantial improvement in the mobility of people and freight; by developing  new concepts of freight transport and logistics and by reducing accident rates, fatalities and casualties and improving security.

These activities are addressed in this Work Programme by three Calls for proposals:
-Mobility for Growth
-Green Vehicles
-Small Business and Fast Track Innovation for Transport

Calls:

o   MG-5.4-2015: Strengthening the knowledge and capacities of local authorities

o   MG-5.5a-2015: Demonstrating and testing innovative solutions for cleaner and better urban transport and mobility

o   MG-5.5b-2015: Demonstrating and testing innovative solutions for cleaner and better urban transport and mobility

o   MG-8.4a-2015: Smart governance, network resilience and streamlined delivery of infrastructure innovation

o   MG-8.4b-2015: Smart governance, network resilience and streamlined delivery of infrastructure innovation
