Dr. Kadir TOPBAŞ, President of UCLG, Made Contacts in the UN 3.06.2014
The United Nations has taken a resolution to renew the worldwide humanitarian aid system. A summit will convene to lay the foundations of the “New Humanitarian Aid System”, as the existing system does not respond to the current needs. Ban Ki-moon, who received Dr. Kadir TOPBAŞ, President of UCLG, at his office in the UN Headquarters, announced that the summit will be held in Istanbul, in 2016.
TOBPAŞ spoke at the UN Economic and Social Council
Kadir TOPBAŞ, President of UCLG participated in the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Meeting in New York, US, and made a speech. In his speech, Topbaş, who is a member of the High Level Panel on the Post-2015 Agenda, consisting of 26 persons, stated that, the main goal in the post-2015 period is to eliminate poverty, and that it includes deprivation of education, gender discrimination and deprivation of humanitarian values, as well. “As we contact problems at the local level, their solutions must be at the local level, as well. For this reason, governments must grant more power and dedicate resources to local governments, and ensure that they act together with local governments as a stakeholder”, said Topbaş, who stressed that problems are felt locally.

Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the UN, invited Dr. Kadir Topbaş to his office and deliberated with him for some time. Ban Ki-moon thanked Topbaş for the support he provided for making the voice of the local governments heard in the UN. Moon, who expressed that they were undecided between Geneva, where the UN is headquartered, and Istanbul for hosting the “Humanitarian Aid Summit” to be held in 2016, stated that they have finally chosen Istanbul as the hosting city.
Humanitarian Aid Summit
The “2016 World Humanitarian Aid Summit”, which aims at creating “a humanitarian aid agenda which is more active and comprehensive, and dealing the problems that the world is faced with”, to be hosted by Istanbul was brought to the agenda.
Ban Ki-moon, who stated that, many countries, including especially Switzerland, were insistent for hosting the summit, in which it is aimed that the foundations of “New Humanitarian Aid System” will be laid, as the existing system does not meet the current needs, declared that they preferred Turkey.
Evaluations will be made within the scope of the summit, on how the humanitarian aids will be delivered and emergency action will be taken, and the works to be done in order to reach the needy. The summit is expected to provide ideas to the states, humanitarian aid organizations, UN, civil society, private sector, technical experts and other stakeholders.
