On Tuesday 26th of November, Mr. Michael James WARREN, Strategy Advisor at UN-Habitat, paid a visit to UCLG-MEWA office to explore possible collaboration within the framework of UN-Habitat’s Program on Safer Cities.
UN-Habitat's Safer Cities Program is a global initiative that provides technical support to local governments in their efforts to create safe environments for urban citizens. Over the past 15 years, UN-Habitat has worked in 77 cities on every continent; also initiated and support the Global Network for Safer Cities, the premier platform for city-to-city cooperation on urban safety issues, currently chaired by former Mexico mayor Marcelo Luis Ebrard Casaubón.
Working on Safer Cities Programme does not include only Police; it is also a trans-sectoral approach including many tools of municipalities such as Urban Planning, economical development, social inclusion etc.
In 2012, the programme began to develop an ambitious proposal for a Global Centre of Excellence on Safer Cities, to serve as a UN-mandated hub for knowledge and innovation on policy and practice that improves citizen safety.
UCLG-MEWA will be happy support the process of opening this Global Centre and will consider attentively all development related to upcoming projects and new partnerships. If you are interested by the Safer Cities Program do not hesitate to contact us.
