Child Friendly Cities 9.12.2013
On the 21st of November, Ms. Iraz Oyku SOYALP from UNICEF Turkey visited UCLG-MEWA office in Istanbul to discuss possible collaboration on the Child Friendly Cities Program in Turkey.
Child Friendly Cities is an initiative UNICEF has been leading since 1992. It is the local implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. It functions in two times: elaboration of criteria to define child friendly city in collaboration with all partners and then implementation. UNICEF provides trainings and supports the work through its experts.
In 2006 UNICEF started this project in Turkey in the following cities: Antalya, Bursa, Erzincan, Gaziantep, Karaman, Kayseri, Karşehir, Konya, Sivas, Tekirdağ, Trabzon and Uşak. This initiative has been implemented in Lebanon (Sidon), Jordan (Greater Amman), Palestine (Gaza Municipality, Rafah, Jenine and Jericho) and in Syria.
UCLG-MEWA will participate in the steering committee of the program and promote the experience at the regional level. In this framework we would like to call our members to express their interest for such initiative.
